CASSS Community News - November 08, 2018
Share |

Thank you for tuning in to this week's edition of CASSS Community News! You’ll notice this weeks’ email has a focus on youth.  As the Executive Director, I’ll be reaching out to you periodically with messages that I hope you’ll find of interest and useful.

Globally, the next generation workforce is clearly different from its predecessors. There are different age distributions in different countries. Potential workers are more geographically dispersed, with uneven skill distribution; and more varied in what they find engaging and motivating. According to a 2016 research report released by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), more than two-thirds of organizations hiring full-time staff indicate they are having a difficult time recruiting for job openings.  And it isn't getting easier.

CASSS is working to build the following programs to support young scientists. We encourage you to help us spread the word.

Travel Grants for Students and Post-Doctoral Fellows

CASSS provides travel reimbursements for Ph.D. students and post-docs who present posters or oral talks at both CASSS and non-CASSS symposia. Participating in CASSS' symposia allows students plenty of opportunities to meet leading industry and government researchers who could be potential employers.

Outside of the family of CASSS meetings, we partner with major international symposia. Participation at meetings such as these provide students significant opportunities to meet leading academic researchers and developers behind the latest instrumentation and methods.

Each year the Board of Directors allocates $50,000USD to these programs.  However, we sometimes struggle to give all of the funds away.  We need your to help spread the word.  To find out more information on available grants and how to apply for them, visit the CASSS Student Travel Grant Homepage.

Frantisek Svec Fellowship for Innovative Studies

Established in 2016, the objective of the CASSS Frantisek Svec Fellowships for Innovative Studies is to provide resources to graduate students and post-doctoral researchers so that they may explore and blend a range of possible ‘out of the box’ or cross-disciplinary training or innovative learning opportunities in the broad fields of biopharmaceutical science and technology – and thereby help build their capacity to be future leaders in biopharmaceutical development. The fellowship honors and embraces the legacy of Frantisek Svec who set a high bar for scientific creativity, excellence, and service during his distinguished scientific career and tenure on the CASSS Board of Directors.

We are currently taking applications for the 2019 Fellowships.  Find out more and share the information with your network.

As we look forward to 2019, I hope CASSS becomes the place for the next generation’s leaders to connect with today’s professionals and launch their careers in the biopharmaceutical world.  If you have any comments or feedback, I welcome you to contact me.  I can be reached at

With best regards,
