This Q&A is part of an ongoing CASSS series where we invite members to meet other members of the CASSS Community.

This time, we turn our Member Spotlight on Linda Narhi, a CASSS Associate Director and member of the WCBP Organizing Committee. She is currently the Scientific Executive Director at Amgen in Thousand Oaks, CA.

Q. How long have you been with your current organization and/or position?

A. I've been at Amgen for almost 32 years, in my current position for 4 years, since the formation of our current Process Development Department. I was in a similar position in my previous function for 4 years previous.

Q. What was your motivation to volunteer with CASSS?
A. I think it's only through pre-competitive collaboration and interactions between industry and regulators, and also academics, that we can improve the safety and efficacy of drugs, make them cheaply and efficiently, delivering to patient needs globally. I would like to help that happen. I think that CASSS is very effective in that space and has the same goals. I'm especially enthusiastic about having CASSS CMC forums across the globe, and the helpful interactions with global regulators.

Q. Where did you grow up?
A. I grew up in Ann Arbor, MI, where my father worked for the city (not for the university so we didn't get to go on any fun sabaticals). I came to Southern California on my honeymoon (and for my husband to go to Caltech), fell in love with it and never went back.

Q. What do you do to relax? Do you have any hobbies?
A. To relax I walk daily in the hills by my house with my dogs. I have a lot of hobbies. I love gardening and always have vegetables and fruit growing. I do photography, especially landscapes and cityscapes, and I love to cook and read.

Q. What's your favorite type of food?
A. Italian and Mexican. I'm an ovo-lacto vegetarian and both those cuisines have lots of great choices for me.

Q. Do you speak any languages besides English?
A. French, though it's rusty now!

Q. Do you have any children? Pets?
We have 2 children. My son is 28, married for 4 years and lives in downtown LA. He is an architect working at a structural engineering firm. My daughter-in-law is a writer and a production assistant in the movie/TV industry. My daughter is 26 and just started her first job as a Physical Therapist in Riverside. Her boyfriend is finishing his PhD in Biochemistry at UCR. I also have 5 pets currently: two 7 month old kittens (litter mates), a 12 year old Westie, and two 6 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (also litter mates).

Q. What's your favorite type of music?
A. I like many different kinds of music, including classical, but my favorite to listen to when I'm driving or working is Alternative, including newer groups like Churches and older ones like Incubus.

Q. What was the last movie you saw in theater or book you read and loved?
A. I don't go to many movies, but I just saw Black Panther (first movie I've been to in about 3 years) and loved it. My favorite book that I read in the last year is Manhattan Beach.

Q. What famous person do you admire and why?
A. I really admire Jane Goodall. She followed her dreams and didn't let what others thought she should do affect her choices, and she basically invented the empirical approach to a branch of science. She has devoted her life to making the world a better place for humans and animals, and it truly is a better place because of her efforts. She is also true to her values in everything she does, but with all that she remains down to earth and approachable. She has several conservation projects for children, and when my daughter participated in one, we got to meet Jane. She talked to every child at the event, really giving them her attention and listening to them. She's a remarkable woman!

Q. What would people be surprised to know about you?
A. I love to make preserves, jams, marmalade and relishes from the fruit and veggies in my garden, and I enter some of these in the Ventura County Fair. If you google me looking for an image, the only one you'll find is of me holding a jar for an article in the local paper called "Cook's Corner" about my marmalade and how cooking is just chemistry you can eat.
