Letter to Our Community

Dear CASSS Members,

The horrific death of George Floyd has sparked an overdue global outcry against racial prejudice. Injustice not only impacts individuals but ripples throughout society and weakens our social fabric.

As a global scientific community dedicated to developing medicines to help people, CASSS is committed to acting collectively to establish a professional culture that is safe, respectful and inclusive.  As individuals and an organization, we affirm that bias and intolerance are not only unethical and unacceptable, but antithetical to science. We believe that diversity strengthens the scientific enterprise and society as a whole.

Yet we recognize that our own organization does not fully reflect these ideals.  In fact, at the last CASSS face-to-face board meeting we began a discussion on mechanisms to increase the diversity and inclusivity of our leadership levels and had planned to continue at this Spring’s meeting – until our entire schedule was upended by the pandemic.

We know good intentions and discussions are not enough.  We must choose to act in order to affect meaningful changes as an organization.  We commit to you, our members, that we will not only prioritize this discussion at our next Board meeting, we will commit to taking positive actions that will bring different viewpoints and perspectives to the CASSS table.  We will report back to you our progress and plan of action.

We are united in our goal to create a better, more inclusive scientific organization to achieve a healthier world - for all.
