The Member Spotlight Q&A is part of an ongoing CASSS series, in which we invite members to meet other members of the CASSS Community.

The Member Spotlight is an ongoing Q&A series focused on getting to know the CASSS community. Today’s spotlight shines on
Mary Beth Pelletier, Director, Global Large Molecule & Gene Therapy QC Analytical Technology at Biogen.

Q. How long have you been with your current organization and/or position?
I’ve been with Biogen almost 10 years and in the same functional area that entire time; I’ve held a version of my current position for a bit over five years.

Q. What was your motivation to volunteer with CASSS?
I attended WBCP and then kept going back, as I found it to be unique among all other conferences I had attended in the quality of the science presented and sincere interest of participants to share knowledge and experiences for the good of patients and the industry. These currents flow throughout all the CASSS events in which I’ve participated.

Q. Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised mostly in North Carolina.

Q. What do you do to relax? Do you have any hobbies?
I am devoted to my daily meditation and workout - helps keep me sane!

Q. What's your favorite type of food?
My favorites include anything Mediterranean, Thai, or Indian

Q. Do you speak any languages besides English?
Not well enough to claim

Q. Do you have any children? Pets?
I have two sons (4 and 6), so my life is full of sports, music, and superheroes.

Q. What’s your favorite type of music?
I love classical music and will listen to most anything post-baroque.

Q. What was the last movie you saw in the theater or book you read and loved?
I just finished Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell, which was fascinating and a bit disturbing! I thoroughly enjoyed Michelle Obama’s Becoming, but I can find something to love in most books I read.

Q. What’s your favorite destination to travel to?
I love to travel! With two little ones, personal travel has been limited recently to locations in driving distance plus one family ski trip to the Western US each year, but I do get to Europe a couple of times a year with work. I'm not sure I could pick a single favorite, but most any ski town as well as Santorini, Greece come to mind.

Q. What would people be surprised to know about you?
That I spent three years of my childhood living in Tokyo due to my father’s job with IBM. It was formative and mind-opening, and the people were so kind to a little blonde girl. Japan will always have a special place in my heart after that experience.
