The Member Spotlight Q&A is part of an ongoing CASSS series, in which we invite members to meet other members of the CASSS Community.

This month, we turn our Member Spotlight on Jared Bee, Associate Director at REGENXBIO Inc. and DC Scientific Discussion Group.

Q: What was your motivation to volunteer with CASSS?
I have found helping to facilitate the informal knowledge sharing at CASSS forums is very valuable to the professional community. I have learned a lot from scientists in different fields that has helped me with my own work.

Q: What do you do to relax? Do you have any hobbies?
My favorite thing to do on a day off is to go mountain biking or hiking on local trails in the Washington DC area.

Q: What's your favorite type of food or special dish you cook? Why?
I enjoy poached eggs because it reminds me of breakfasts with my grandmother. I have improved at the deceptively ‘easy’ art of making good eggs.

Q: What is your favorite movie, tv show, music or book?
I read and enjoyed the Game of Thrones books and TV show. Hopefully the book version of the series will be finished soon.

Q: What famous person (dead or alive) would you choose to have dinner with? Why?
I’d be interested to hear what ideas Shakespeare would have in the modern age.

Q: What’s your favorite travel experience?
I saw the movie ‘The Beach’ (about backpackers in Thailand) during a very wet and cold European winter. It inspired me to take an unplanned and spontaneous adventure to visit the location and enjoy the sun shortly afterwards.

Q: What would people be surprised to know about you?
When I mention I don’t like peanut butter I get a lot of surprised reactions; probably due to how popular PB&Js are where I currently live.

Q: How did you get inspired to go into science/biotech/pharma industry?
Health is an issue that personally impacts everyone and can be the largest challenge faced by a family. The pace of science and medical advances resulting in new or better treatments for diseases is incredible. It is very rewarding to help bring these advances to patients..

Q: What was the last movie you saw in the theater or book you read and loved?
I’m kind of a non-fiction junky and am inspired by people who pursue accomplishment their own way, with complete dedication to an idea. I recently read The Outsiders: Eight Unconventional CEOs and Their Radically Rational Blueprint for Success. It was fascinating to read about their assessments of what would determine success in the context of their time and industry and how that led to the different approaches each person took to achieve unprecedented returns.

Q: If you did anything other than your current occupation, what would it be?
No idea!
