The Member Spotlight Q&A is part of an ongoing CASSS series, in which we invite members to meet other members of the CASSS Community.

This month, we turn our Member Spotlight on Joe Siemiatkoski, CASSS volunteer and Senior Consultant at J. Siemiatkoski Consulting

Q: How long have you been with your current organization and/or position?
I have been a consultant for 5 years now, independent for the last two.

Q: What was your motivation to volunteer with CASSS?
It was an opportunity to be part of something inspiring. The open, scientific discussions which take place at CASSS conferences really motivated me to be a part of the group.

Q: Where did you grow up?
Wolcott, Connecticut; a quintessentially boring suburb of Waterbury, CT.

Q: What do you do to relax? Do you have any hobbies?
To relax, I like to read or hang out on the beach. My hobbies include woodworking/furniture making, scuba diving, bicycling, and cooking.

Q: What's your favorite type of food?
That varies quite a bit from week to week. In general, I like foods of different ethnicities as it is a way to experience parts of other cultures. I like Spanish, Moroccan, Thai, Cuban, Indian, Italian, French…

Q: Do you speak any languages besides English?
Italian (no ancestral connection, I just love the place, culture, food, history, and art)

Q: Do you have any children? Pets?
No, and no.

Q: What’s your favorite type of music?
Similar answer to favorite food question… I like classical to rock, traditional folk, Spanish guitar, etc.

Q: What was the last movie you saw in the theater or book you read and loved?
Last movie was the Freddie Mercury biopic, “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Last book was “The Soul of an Octopus”.

Q: What famous person do you admire and why?
Lately I would have to say Ruth Bader Ginsberg, a very tough person who stands up for what she believes in.

Q: What’s your favorite destination to travel to?
Italy, or anyplace with good diving.

Q: What would people be surprised to know about you?
I took a 6 year break from science to become a professional chef back in the 90s. It was a good experience; but I learned that it was a very difficult way to make a living compared to being an analytical biochemist.
